The area of remote and location independent working is fizzing. Some see remote working as a necessity, some as a nice to have and some choose not to embrace it at all. It feels like individuals, industries and businesses aren’t quite aligned on the values of remote working yet and only the new are making the leap.
Remote and location independent working is a solution, not a problem. If we clearly identify the challenges faced by both individuals and businesses in achieving their ambitions, we can better understand the value of a solution. One common problem that remote work seems to address well is motivation. Whether we realize it or not, remote work solutions / projects heavily contribute to the successful motivation of people and teams.
A friend of mine works in a professional services business, which recently enabled their employees to remote work. She simply put – “it has been life changing”. It saves her time and energy in relation as she doesn’t have to commute. She gets to better control her time (her work is billable) and interruptions are limited. She feels trusted to get on with her role. The challenges are minor, the equipment at home isn’t the same as in the office and she ends up working later than she probably should (office hours’ finish, working hours don’t). By all accounts, she feels significantly more motivated and happy.
Global Work Analytics report states that over “36% of employees would choose to telecommute over getting a raise”.
More people are starting to value how they do their jobs over the rewards they are given for doing them. It would seem that my friend (and 36% of others) is more intrinsically motivated than she used to be (explained in an article from Fransico Saez). If people are increasingly motivated by autonomy, mastery and purpose, are remote working and location independent solutions more desirable? Businesses and industries will need to respond to this shift and offering remote working is a good start (as in working from home) but I don’t think it’s enough – they will need to support people’s desires to live better lives whilst doing the work they love.
